I read "Call the Midwife" before the PBS show came about. It enthralled me so when I found out a trilogy was available, I bought it immediately. Jennifer Lee Worth is a wonderful writer. Her stories take you right into the homes she was visiting. Vivid descriptions of people, buildings, sounds, smells, daily routines and the time period kept me entranced. I did have a little trouble getting through the "workhouse" section. That was only because the writing was so compelling, I felt like I was right there with her. Reading the heartrending stories of the abjectly poor in England made me stop and gather my breath before I could continue. Many times I cried and the stories still haunt me. Her stories of how the sisters for whom she worked helped her overcome her resistance to the appalling conditions inspired me. I work with the aged and demented. The line from Sister Julienne about confused Sister Monica Joan, "It is our privilege to care for her" fills in the sometimes ravaged parts of my own heart. I highly recommend this trilogy to all women. I don't think many males would like the descriptions of birth, death, disease, poverty, filth, overcrowding and starvation. But I'm sure there are some who would find it as riveting as I. I highly recommend this trilogy.
I loved the tv show but the books are even more wonderful. I have read and reread them. I love how Jennifer writes; candid and witty yet empathic and caring. And I learnt much about midwifery and childbirth in these books too.The style makes for easy reading, lots of little short stories within a bigger overall picture of London life in the 1950s.The book about the workhouse is heavy going, it is emotionally taxing and will wrench at the heart of even the most composed person. But it is a story that needs to be told if only so the practices are not repeated in history. And Worth peppers even the bleakest tales with her characteristics bursts of sunshine.I would highly recommended this collection
Wonderfully written, authentic to the period with sufficient tensions for literary interest; I could;t put it down until I read all three books. I am not sure if there are more offerings in the series, but after a short break from the Trilogy I intend to investigate and read any I find. This could well be a bibliography recommendation for students in basic nursing education, especially in light of the changes in health care delivery today. Readers may benefit from reading more about the Eat End of London and those years. A serious book club whose members can manage more than short reads would enjoy this trilogy; although each book can stand alone, I suggest reading them in order. Regarding the vendor, the book arrived quickly and the condition was accurately described, shipping was reasonable even though a UK publication. Regarding access to the book: It is a shame that many excellent books published in the UK, and elsewhere in English-speaking countries, are not better known and more readily accessible to USA readers until they become popular and are reprinted, sometimes under different titles.
Jennifer Worth, once Lee writes three wonderful, warm, human books. It was only on the second or third reading that I began to see the worn spots, the prejudices, the snobbery that leaks through. While it didn't detract from the books, and lent them a human note, they did affect my enjoyment of them.Once you finish reading these three, and absolutely drooling over the BBC mini-series made off of these, go read "The Midwife's Sister." Her sister Christine fills in all those, oh so careful blanks Jennifer left in her narrative. Nothing prepares one for the revelations, and I'm not going to spoil it. But the four books belong together.
I must admit, first I saw Call the Midwife on BBC Entertainment. Unfortunately BBC Entertainment ceased to broadcast to Hungary more than 2 years ago, which I find disagreeable. Then I was given the book by an English friend, Susan, whom I met in Crete.I read it in paperback first.(One novel) Ihave become more and more eager to get more...Since I have had my Kindle my son helps me to order great variety of reading material, among others I asked Jennifer Worth books. She talks about people in such a style I feel near to me. I have always been interested in the history of the XX. century, its culture and social circumstances, I love the language. Great Britain, or rather the United Kingdom, or the British Isles and any other English speaking country, their literature interests me.The 1950s is such an era which seems to be extremely interesting for me.Last but not least I can always study new words, phrases, etc. They are all rereadable masterpieces, it'll be easy on Kindle. I love it.The book gave me so much emotional and human treasure with its heroes and stories and events, they might become my friednds .I enjoyed reading about the life of these poor or not so well-off people's life..Cockney is just icing on the cake, Some documentary, some fiction, I would call the genre 'docufics'.I guess it's feminine reading. Do anyone agree with me?

In earlier times women were attended by untrained women who had a reputation for dishonesty, at times making off with the patient's valuables. Hygiene was not a priority. They were not always reliable either.This fine group of midwives, led by nursing nuns, brought a high standard of care to East End London. So many stories of pregnancy and birth.This book brought back all my memories of being a midwife, although I always worked in hospitals. I am just so happy to find a book which tells everyone what wonderful people midwives are!
