While the war was raging, many of us behind the hallowed walls of higher education were hunkering down, doing our obligatory 16 credit hours per semester, aware of what was lurking if we dropped a class. Barry and his buddies were sucked up by the vortex of the Selective Service System and packed off to a country we were only remotely and recently aware of. Barry and many of our colleagues mysteriously vanished- most of whom would appear years later as significantly changed people. We were only remotely aware of a strange sounding country, half a world away. Running off to Canada wasn’t an option, but neither was quitting school for a threat that bore no resemblance to what our fathers had thwarted. This tome tells a compelling story from the ground’s eye level of combat against an elusive and determined enemy. The frustrations and futility in losing friends in a dubious cause are described in great detail by a CO who gave it his all and earned the respect of those who had nothing but had nothing but loathing for someone who would not pick up a weapon. Barry’s principles would earn him the highest respect and the accolades of his superior NCOs and officers. I doubt that there’s another book with this perspective on the Vietnam war. A Conscientious Objector who cared more about his fellow soldiers and his commitment to his God than himself is told in an unassuming and compelling story that deserves a wide audience.
What a great read. The characters came alive as they went from civilian society to becoming hard charging soldiers in the hot dry or hot wet jungles of Vietnam. This story is the almost forgotten time of the late sixties and Beaven depicts the excitement and boredom of daily life without showers, tasty food, or the comforts of the USA. These warriors come alive. They knew any moment would be their last but proudly did their duty. The Blackhorse 11th Cavalry came was filled with graphic word pictures of the Vietnam and these warriors.
Dr. Beaven has written an on-the-ground account of his experience during the Vietnam war. It's a subject that I was eager to read. I just missed the draft and was in school, then family. Seeing through his eyes what service was like opened my eyes. Thank you Barry.
This book tells the story of the Vietnam War from the eyes of a conscientious objector that put his life in danger day after day to oversee the safety of the troops around him. His beliefs and Church background gave him the strength and courage to fulfill his duties to the highest level. I recommend this book to all combat veterans. Larry Waters New Haven, IN
