About the Author
Alfred-Maurice de Zayas has been visiting Professor of International Law at the Universities of British Columbia (Vancouver), DePaul (Chicago), Trier (Germany), Institut Universitaire de Hautes Etudes Internationales (Geneva), Académie Internationale de droit constitutionnel (Tunis), and Universidad de Alcala de Henares (Madrid). A retired senior lawyer with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, he currently teaches full time at the Geneva School of Diplomacy. For fifteen years he was President of the United Nations Society of Writers and today is President of PEN International, Centre Suisse romande.

Pleased with the book. Helped to educate me to the plight of German expellee's after WWII in eastern Europe.
Good reading
It never ceases to amaze me at how people can give books that detail human suffering a one or two star rating writing such awful things as "they deserved it", etc. I read this book and found it to be an unbiased account of what was taking place at the time.
An excellent historical account of what happened at and after the conclusion of World War II that is not commonly discussed. The allies did not live up to their stated goal of self-determination, democracy, and liberation of all peoples. A must read....
As a student of European history, WWII usually ends with the division of Germany and the Marshall plan. What is not presented is the massive population shifts that occurred for the next 15 years as 18 million people changed countries and borders shifted West. Minorities in Central and Eastern Europe were brutally expelled under the fog of Soviet control and West Germany was repopulated by emigres from the East. Millions of people lost all they had, homes they had lived in for hundreds of years. My father-in-law was one of them.
Zayas brings a welcome emotional and personal dimension to the tragic story of the post World War II explusion of German residents from the Eastern Europe countries in which they had lived for 100s of years. While other writers have purposely avoided first-person testimonials from expulsion victims and the heart-rending stories related by their descendants, Zayas happily - and without apology - includes this material and more giving this tragedy a truly human face.
I ordered 2 copies of this book, one for myself and one for a relative whose family left Silesia. I had previously ordered a copy for another friend. The book is fascinating and provides insight into a chapter of history that isfrequently deliberately ignored. Who wants to read about Allied crimes against humanity?! The author has researched the material exhaustively and presents it skillfully in a highly readable form without neglecting any sigfinicant aspects of this horrendous period of European history. While covering a painful subject, A Terrible Revenge is not as painful as the more detailed examination of the Allied Occupation covered by "After the Reich."However, one very significant problem was that there are 32 pages missing in the book, pages 23 through 54. Thechapter "Expulsion Prehistory" is almost entirely missing and much of the chapter "War and Flight" is also missing.A further annoyance is the fact that page 86 is followed by page 55, so you get an extra 30 pages without anything new. A Terrible Revenge is an important, highly informative, well-written work poorly printed.
Family history, what a shame this is never made public.
