I was lucky enough to take 2D design from Professor Mantle about 6 years ago. He wrote this book to cover what he wanted to teach in his class but could not find a book that covered it all in the right way. He did not require us to buy the book but instead provided us with all of the material as hand outs. By the middle of the semester, I realized that this information was priceless and I needed the book as a personal reference book. I actually understood color theory and color wheels for the first time ever! As an artist, I've used this information pretty much daily since then. And now that I am teaching, I am going to use this book as a reference for my classes. (I'm even hoping I can get the school to order a class set.)This is the best book I have found for really learning color theory.
I've wanted to learn art theory since I started taking pastel lessons and began to realize creating pleasing art is not just a matter of slapping some colored mefium or graphite on a paper. But I had no idea where to start. I bought one book, but it was all print with just a few very vague sketches to illustrate the concepts. While I don't mind learning physics concepts from books with ink sketches and diagrams, I need more visual demonstrations for art concepts. I took a wild chance on this book (A Visual Guide to Classical Art Theory by Eric Mantle), and it is *exactly* what I need! I highly recommend it to all art students and practitioners.
Everything you need or want to know about color harmony. Very easy to read and understand. Great for my classes.
I knew many of the rules of perspective, value, and chroma intuitively. This book adds clarity so that I can get the result I want, or figure out what is wrong and how to correct unintended distortions in drawing and painting.
Really helpful book, even my mom got into it - and she is not an artist.There was a typo though...see photo. It’s driving me crazy! (Page 16)
I am two thirds the book and can already say I love it. as promised, the book is very visual. Even the text is very brief, just what m needs to be said. The best part of the book is the visuals for color theory. This in itself made the book worth it.
After reading several books （about 20) about drawing, it's the most helpful. Very solid and practical knowledge for a serious art learner, like me, who did not learn drawing when I was young.
This book was recommended by a well known artist demonstrating at our local art club. This book is one of my go to books for every aspect of painting. The visual diagrams are invaluable. Love this book.
