Author Bio Mark Woodward is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Arizona State University and Visiting Professor of Comparative Religion at the Center for Religious and Cross-Cultural Studies at Gadjah Madah University and Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University, both in Yogyakarta Indonesia. He conducted ethnographic research in Indonesia, Burma and Thailand, and is also author of the books, Islam in Java and Java, Indonesia and Islam. II. Author Letter Dear Colleague, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce the new edition of Religions of the World. This is the twelfth edition, and the book has gone through many changes over the years. It was originally authored by Lewis Hopfe, a dedicated teacher and scholar whose vision for teaching the World Religions course combined a sense of history with an appreciation of keeping the subject alive by focusing on contemporary trends in religions and the role of religion in world affairs. In the editions I have edited, and sections of the book that I have rewritten, I have done the best that I can to retain this perspective. I continue to include both primary texts and first hand accounts of what is now called "lived religion" or somewhat less pretentiously "religion and everyday life. In fact, I explore these "living religions" in terms of the historical and cultural factors that produced them, the lives of their founders, their basic teachings, and their historical development and current status in the world. I have been fortunate enough to have lived in many parts of the world and to have had the chance to interact with people from most of the religious traditions discussed in the book. These experiences have had a major impact on almost every chapter, especially those concerned with contemporary religious life. It is also apparent in original photographs that I have used whenever possible. Another unique feature of this book is frank and honest discussion of the issue of religion and violence. I think that there is no escaping this issue and that our students will hold us accountable if we do not help them to understand how it is that people of many, indeed almost all, faiths can use religion to motivate or excuse violence and the dehumanization of others. This textbook was assigned as one for a class in World Religions.You will note a recurring theme in several other reviews that they felt it gave a good overview, but that they recognized a number of false statements regarding their own religion (usually Christianity) and so they questioned how true a description it was of other religionsThose reviews are extremely charitable. This is the one good thing I will say about it. It is a very easy read. However, the downside that it seemed like every other page, every page when it came to Islam and Christianity, I would have to stop what I was reading and fact check something that seemed off. And I was usually right.Just egregious distortions and poor scholarship. It would be almost comical except for the fact that this seems to be a widely used textbook and so for decades now young adults trot off to college, are usually fairly ignorant about their own religion, and are then spoon fed this garbage and they take every word of it as gospel. . . Because after all, they are learning it in a college class.I'm not going to get into all the distortions and errors. However, it was SO off that I actually did a little research. This book was originally written by Lewis Hopfe, a professor of religious studies. You will notice that the focus is on his credentials in the book promotion saying he was an "author, teacher, pastor, archaeologist, college dean, weight lifter, and spiritual guide to students."I tracked down a copy of the third edition of this book and briefly compared some sections. My impression was that Hopfe was a Christian with a liberal bent. He died in 1995.Mark Woodard has since taken over the revisions. There has since been a serious change to a pro-Islamic slant since that time. Go to his page on his university site and you will understand why when you see his focus. I would call him an Islamic apologist to those who know nothing about Islam or history and so wouldn't recognize what is false.Just for one example, on page 352 of the 11th edition, there is a section on the Qur'an as the word of God. Setting aside the misportrayal of the Christian belief of the Bible as the Word of God (whether through ignorance or a deliberate distortion I'm not sure), it states "the Qur'an is the word of God: It is eternal, absolute, and irrevocable."Popular culture as a whole was made aware of the falseness of this claim after the uproar of Salmon Rushdie's "Satanic Verses.".However, one would think that a "scholar" of Islam such as Woodard would know that the Qur'an itself states this is not the case in Surah 2:106:"None of Our revelations do We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, but We substitute something better or similar: Knowest thou not that Allah Hath power over all things?"The whole doctrine of abrogration is a sticky one for an Islamic apologist to get around and certainly makes that statement a ludicrous falsehood.Other frequent comments that can be found in reviews on this book are regarding the extremely high price. I completely agree. Fortunately my professor didn't require the latest (13th) edition and I was able to buy the book for $.99 plus shipping. Anything more would have been highway robbery. Maybe Woodard considers that jizya. . . Which is not explained in this book. You'll have to go to another source to learn about that
This incredible book describes the world's major religions including the origin, historical development, the basic principles, beliefs and taboos of each religion. The book does not advocate one religion over another. It is extremely well written and easy to read. It provides a clear explanation of the differing beliefs within Christianity answering the basic questions that you always wanted to know. I recommend it to all people of all religious beliefs, atheists and anyone interested in the history of the world, war or modern day politics. It provides a basic foundation for understanding what is going on in world news. If you aspire to being moderately intellegent, you will want to have the knowledge that is provided in this book.
Wikipedia is more accurate, more knowledgeable, and less biased. Aside from being required to buy this, there would be no reason to do so. I will say it's a tad better than Huston Smith's book.
If you are looking for definitive knowledge on the differing religions of the world, don't look here. This author is full of speculation and conjecture, not factual information.
Was an interesting read and as an atheist it is not too biased to one religion or another. I was thinking about reselling this after the class, but I think I'm going to hang on to this book.
Very poor quality
This book was damaged when I received it. The cover fell apart the second day I had it. I taped it back together because I needed this textbook for class. Never again
Good book with lots of information - gave basic info but only gave a starting direction on classwork and assignments - had to do most research using other sources.
