I first read this book as a paperback around 2003. The story is compelling, and having grown up in Alaska and still living here it gripped me all the way through. This, along with many other stories including a few the author touches on as he tells the story of the La Conte, show why the USCG is such an appreciated and loved group of rescuers in Alaska, and gives the reader a real look inside how dangerous their job is.This book is good enough I find myself revisiting it every couple years for another read through, and I long ago gave my well worn paperback to a friend who had never read it (and loved it), so I now use the Kindle Edition.
One of the most suspenseful, page turning book I ever read. The seat of the pants flying by those remarkable flight crews are incredible I can't imagine being out in a storm like that, nor can I imagine how in gods name, they were able to fly those helicopters to the edge of their envelopes. How anyone survived that episode is clearly a miracle. Hats off to the US Coast Guard and hats off for a great story. The author has literally placed me in the water with those fisherman and I felt we were all going to die! A great book. A must read
This was a wonderful story, and very well written. The peril that these men faced was incredible. I have a new understanding of what the Coast Guard actually do. These men are mostly unsung heroes. Everyday these men go to work not knowing what they may be expected to do, and if they will come out of it alive, and yet, they keep going back out to save lives. The fishermen who get into these situations are lucky that there are men like the Coast Guard who risk everything to try and save them. They can't always save them. but they give it all they have. Tremendous book, and I recommend it to everyone.
Thought the author was going to dive into the details of one rescue mission. Instead he bounces around from one mission to the other. Each story is exciting and fully fleshed out but after awhile I got a bit numbed to the suspense.Still a very interesting read about the ethos of air-sea rescue mission personnel.
Excellent read. One of the best books I've ever read. The author takes you into the eye of the storm the hearts and minds of the crew and survivors. A tribute to the pilots and crew of the USCG. Awesome story of survival in the same league as The Long Walk. A must read
This book is as good as you'll ever find. The whole book was so interesting I swear I couldn't put it down. Spike Walker is the perfect writer for an amazing life story like this one. I was honestly glued to the book. It was so exciting and happy and sad and funny all in the same book. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes true stories about men who put it all on the line and risk everything just to make a living doing what they love.A most excellent life saving story. Mind numbing. I loved every word of it. Any one who likes the tv show, Deadliest Catch will without a doubt, love this book. Guaranteed.
I liked book once I started reading it was hard too put down. I would recommend too anyone and price was right
I've spent most of my life on the ocean both in the U.S. Navy and for the U.S. Navy and as a private boater. This book was far more exciting than my whole career. I spent some of that time on a U.S. destroyer doing "at sea rescue" of downed Navy pilots whose planes have crashed off of aircraft carriers in the North Atlantic. Spike took me right back to those exciting times. This book is a 'must read" for anyone who has or will go in harms way on the ocean.
