This is the best book I have ever read about what really goes on at a service academy, particularly Kings Point. Mr. Jockers not only describes his personal experiences while at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, but also weaves into his compelling story a description of world events at the time and what it was like going to a military academy in the late '60's, early '70's.Anyone (prospective students, parents, family and friends) interested in considering attending a service academy will benefit greatly from reading this book. It is written so as to describe, through personal experiences, the evolution of a Midshipman from being a Plebe candidate in the freshman year, to fully taking advantage of the Sea Year experience sailing on commercial ships to growing as a leader in Third and Second Class years (sophomore and junior years) to the ultimate leadership experience as a First Classman (senior year).I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about the service academy life experience and for those of us who have lived it, and want to reminisce about the "good old days."
Excellent book and brings back vivid memories some of which I had forgotten. Easy read and well written. By page 30 I was laughing and crying at the same time. Having gone though the Academy with Gus, but in a different section, I'm glad to see my classmates all suffered the same plebe year. The story of O'leary's Ark will forever be tattooed in my brain and the night it blew down, and we are talking about a 300' replica of a ship, was a night we shall never forget. While today's academy may not be as tough hazing wise but the rigorous academics are even more than we had. Tough life but worth every second. Gus forgot to add our classmates are brothers for life. Thanks Gus for undertaking this venture.
Great read. Brought back many memories, some pleasant and some not so pleasant. I was in Section 328 with Gus, visited his family on weekends. Great bunch of guys made up our Section. Highly recommend this to all our KP classmates and anyone who wants an inside glimpse of life in a military academy.Rudy Orona
This is a very accurate account of what it was like to attend the US Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point) in the late 60's and early 70's. I am a class of 73 graduate of Kings point myself and although I don't remember ever meeting Mr. Jockers, his description of the Academy is right on. Although life at the Academy has changed since Mr. Jockers and I attended, I would recommend this book for anyone that is thinking of attending or has family or relatives that are thinking of attending. It will certainly give the reader some insights about Academy life. Good job Mr. Jockers.
Certainly a great read and would recommend it to all my fellow classmates. I was flooded with so many wonderful memories. Also a great read for future candidates considering USMMA. Mauritz Erhard '58E
My husband was a 1970 graduate of Kings Point. He had told me several things that had earned him demerits. I enjoyed reading this first hand account, laughing at several parts that were like my husband's experiences. A good read!
A fun and interesting read! My DD is there now-class of 2022. Although many things have likely changed, much is still the same in some of her plebe stories she has shared with me. Thank you for taking the time to write this!
