It is an interesting book and I learned a great deal of the history of that part of the country. Was hoping to find at least a mention of some of our family who had settled in the area. As I worked on our genealogy, alas none was found. It is a good read though for anyone who would be interested in the history of that area of our nation. It is the area that later became West Virginia, interesting tale in there about George Washington as well.
Due to the nature of the material, it is difficult to write this type of book in a way that will grasp the readers attention. However, I found it to be very interesting, informative, and easy to hold my attention. The author answered several questions I had about my own family history within the general information given in his book. If you have relatives that were living during this period of time, or just have an interest in early American history, this is a great book to have!
This book written in the early years of the 1800s is filled with eye witness accounts of the struggles of the early settlers and frontiers men and women who conquered the wilderness and fought the indians who savaged the Whites homes, farms, and forts. There are numerous accounts of incredible bravery by men and women -- our forefathers whom we should be proud to emulate.A great read and well worth the Kindle costs.Reis Kash
I enjoyed this narrative of western Virginian history during the French as india n war, revolutionary war and later. Especially liked the attention to detail and truth . I grew up reading Zane Grey's account of early Pioneer life, and was glad to discover familiar names and stories.
This had more historical info of events than it did of settlers which is more what I was looking for.
Like many similar "old" documents this is sometimes awkward and difficult to follow. Still it has names and dates which can help resolve genealogical questions.
Ancestry research
This is a well researched book, with facts about campaigns, and the scouts, woodsmen and leaders involved that I had never read about in other books by well known authors. It is an easy read for anyone interested in this period in Americas history.
