Review

"Fascinating and timely....Written with first-hand knowledge and authority...White American Youth not only tells Picciolini's gripping story, but it is filled with rare insights that put today's rise of white nationalism in perspective." -- Ali Soufan, former FBI special agent and New York Times bestselling author of The Black Banners: The Inside Story of 9/11 and the War Against al-Qaeda"Simultaneously horrifying and redemptive." -- AlterNet"""Chilling...What we have in Christian Picciolini is something of an informant. He asks us to understand, yes, but not with the intention to excuse--rather the hope to dismantle. He is an unabashed truth-teller, and a willing weapon against hate and bigotry all over the world.""" -- Rooster Magazine"Like a skinhead Goodfellas, White American Youth takes us along on a young man's journey to the dark heart of a distasteful organization, somehow making the narrator's descent every bit as understandable and compelling--and all the more tragic. It's a powerful and moving memoir that brought tears to my eyes." -- Gerald Brennan, author of Resistance, Zero Phase, and Public Loneliness"""White American Youth takes the reader into the depths of the hate movement and sheds a valuable light on the mindset of those who can be lured into this dark world. Christian's astonishing change of heart is a testament to our endless capacity for personal transformation.""" -- Lonnie Nasatir, regional director, Anti-Defamation League"Christian's journey exemplifies how hate and violence are unsustainable, and tolerance, forgiveness, and love are the only ways forward. If Christian can change, there is hope for all humankind--a compelling and extraordinary story." -- Jane Rosenthal, Co-Founder, Tribeca Film Festival"If it's disturbingly easy to embrace the white power ideology, it's not as easy to leave behind. Christian's experiences in White American Youth will shock you, but it's his escape and transformation that will inspire. His honest, often brutal memoir charts a journey from hopelessness to redemption. A profoundly important book, and a riveting read." -- John Horgan, author of The Psychology of Terrorism

This read was compelling for me since I came of age during the skate and punk science in Dallas in the early 90’s. I am not white but I knew of and personally knew punks of all types from hammerskins and anti racists to former skins and the weird marginalized kids like me. I remember being intimidated and freaked out going to certain shows- just wanting to listen to music I loved, or get away from my parents/authority, and see bands with my friends that I felt like, “got me,” etc. It’s weird that even after all these years Picciolini’s description of this scene still brings up the discomfort that some of those small venue performances filled with tension, angst, and fear incited. Yet there are moments of that life at that time that were so much fun. Life is not black and white-no pun intended. His ability to talk about the thing he lived, the things that we all love, ie our family, falling in love, those pivotal moments of having a child and getting married, those light bulb moments where we grow into an adult and are no longer a child are expressed well especially considering he wrote this himself. He didn’t need a ghostwriter. I thought his words were great, but I must confess I’m interested to hear more as I think there is so much more of this story to tell. He is human and this is a story of how anyone can become pulled into darkness no matter their intelligence and strength, how we pull or push people into hate by our own unloving actions. I think it takes a strong person to question your beliefs and consider your idealogy and convictions at any costs and change those beliefs if they are different from the day before because you learned something new today.

Christian tells a credible story of loneliness and longing to belong that pulls him into a web of violence and hatred. Fascinating to hear that is was the feelings of being a father that helped him extricate his life before was too late. His story gives me pause - beneath the skin of the darkest and most violent white supremacist is someone who longs for connection and love. I’ll think about that one for a while. Peace to Christian and to you, fellow readers.

finished this book in 4 days, I got really into the reading after the first chapter. Gave me an understanding or a glance of what these subculture groups feel towards minorities, the agenda they carry, and what their ultimate goal is. Glad to know that the author moved on to a healthier life style.

Powerful, personal narrative about change from racist to non-racist. Breath-taking!

I initially read this to better understand why people radicalise and above all why /how some might de-radicalize and frankly I thought this honest, courageous account offers many valuable insights applicable to many far beyond to boundaries of white nationalists/suprematists. And any easy read.

Interesting perspective from someone that "lived" that lifestyle and then recognized the lie. A good read overall, and a great end result for the author. Wish it had a little more detail on how to help parents and others identify groups / cults like this that prey on youth...

Not a quick read for me but a great read. I had to read this in doses. Fascinating account, so glad Christian able to change his life.

I absolutely loved this book. It reminded me of so many things I myself went through as a young man. I highly recommend it!
