Amazon.com Review
Behind the Scenes with Illustrator Melissa Castrillon This is the second page of the book, and I wanted to have two different shots of the girl in her house. I initially thought this would work best by having a close-up vignette on the left page and then to pan out and show the house and front garden in all its glory. But I changed this for the final and decided that to pan into the scene would create a better mood and make the sequence flow better. Composition is really important in my work, so for this spread I decided I wanted to create an image where you could see both above and below the pond. In the final, I kept to the original composition, but my wonderful art director, Lizzy Bromley, suggested putting birds flying away on the opposite page. It’s a small touch but very effective, creating a whole scene over the two pages. Thanks, Lizzy! :) Again composition played a key part in developing this page. The initial design was to have a small narrative within the spread, having the sister in the tree singing with the birds on one page and then singing the lullaby on the opposite page. In the finished artwork, color was important in linking together the sister, the birds, and her lullaby. I chose the color blue because of bluebirds, but also because it’s a dominant color next to yellow, which is used the most throughout the book.

From School Library Journal
PreS-K—In a rhyming, lyrical bedtime book, a pigtailed child with rosy cheeks dreams up imaginary people, places, and things. Each is the subject of a quatrain that is phrased in a soothing and pleasant rhythm, adding to the precious and endearing quality of the text. The verses follow the same pattern: "If I had a little book,/I would name it Friend./Friend would go wherever I went,/our story would never end." While Laden does not describe the objects themselves as otherworldly, Castrillon creates a dreamlike tone with her pencil illustrations, which swirl with detail in deep blues, burnt oranges, browns, and reds. The objects and backgrounds are slightly surreal, some with a Seussian feel. The child is surrounded by intricate trees, peculiar plants, and curious forest creatures. Dream threads appear as winding blue vines from the child's head. The pages are pleasantly constructed, with a balance of smaller symmetrical vignettes and half and full spreads. The final page shows the child in the arms of a loving adult caregiver and offers the message, "If I had a little dream,/I would name it You./You would make life magical,/where wishes do come true." VERDICT A sweet bedtime selection where the illustrations are the star. Purchase for medium and large collections.—Clara Hendricks, Cambridge Public Library, MA

This is a delightful and different book! It is a simple book with wonderful illustrations. All of our kids love looking through this book and having it read to them (ages 6 months thru 4 years old). There is so much to discover on each page - and the kids are noticing new things whenever we read it. I highly recommend this book! The kids also love the book "Yellow Kayak", by the same author. Please mark if you find my review helpful. Thank you so much!
Our baby liked Peek-a-who by this author when she was a baby (amongst other books). Now she's 22 months old, and we're on a mission to replenish her toddler library because we're all big readers. It's proving to be challenging to find really good toddler books (Mo Willems, Dr. Seuss, Llama Llama are great; Mo Willems as number 1). This one is too simple for an older child, too complex (in a way) for a young one.The illustrations are not my cup of tea, but that's subjective. What's less subjective is the fact that the text starts with "If I had a little [insert: dream, house, table, dog], I would name it _____." In a child's literal mind, this implies some sort of need or want for all these things, so the book becomes slightly sad: we're listening to a story by a child who has nothing (actually - if you understand the phrase "If I had" within correct grammar - it means that you DON'T have it). That's just the first problem. The second is the rhyme:"If I had a little cat, I would name it Curious. It would always make me happy and never make me furious." Alright. Well, whoever wrote this, let me tell you: I'm now pretty furious that I was curious... [about this book for my toddler]. Sending this one back.
I love this book. I read it to my daughter every few days and I think that the story and art are beautiful. The phrasing of the story is darling, and I always tear up on the last page. I'm going to get this for my friends who are having little girls.
Love this book by a favorite children's author. A loving poem-story simply told about life through a child's eyes. A perfect bedtime story.
A beautifully illustrated book. Words are poetic and sentimental. My 3.5 y.o. daughter loves this and wants me to make her a dress like the girl in the book! Will resonate with young readers.
Simply love this book...it's words are sweet and simple, like the artwork..which makes it a pleasure to read. My grandchildren love it as much as I do.
This is my new favorite children's book. The illustrations are beautiful with a vintage feel and it is beautifully written. I hold back tears when I read this to our son. This is going to be my go to baby/kid gift.
Love the words in this little book! The colors were not as bright as I was anticipating. But the words were rich and good. So thankful that this book will be read to my grandchildren.
